Why We Ask Dogs to Sit Before We Throw the Ball

Ball! BALL! BAAAAALL! For some dogs, the sight of a toy temporarily removes every other thought from their head.

Asking for a quick sit before the ball is thrown adds a tiny bit of thinking to a very exciting game. The dog learns that calm behaviour makes the fun continue.

It can help practise impulse control, listening around distractions and switching between excitement and calm.

We keep it simple. We're not trying to ruin fetch with paperwork. A brief pause, a sit if the dog knows it, then off goes the ball.

Training doesn't always need a formal session. Some of the best practice happens in the middle of ordinary fun.
